Al-Ghandi/CCC wins Dubai airport tunnel job

04 April 2003
A team of Athens-based Consolidated Contractors International Company (CCC)and the local Al-Ghandiwas awarded in late March the Nadd al-Hamar/Beirut tunnel contract. Valued at AED 686 million ($187 million), the two-year contract forms part of the Dubai International Airport (DIA) roads programme. The client is Dubai Municipality (MEED 21:2:03).

The contract centres on the construction of a 1.8-kilometre-long tunnel to replace the Qusais-Rashidiya road. Besides the tunnel's construction, it involves the building of two interchanges, a four-lane dual carriageway, access roads, signage and related works. The project is being undertaken to allow DIA to extend the runway as part of its $4,200 million expansion project.

The CCC/Al-Ghandi venture was low bidder for the contract when bids were returned by four contractors in early February.

The venture's nearest rival was the local/UK Dutco Balfour Beatty, which submitted a base bid of AED 725 million ($183 million). The consultant on the project is the US' De Leuw Cather International.
