Al-Hamed picked for Ducab expansion

The local Al-Hamed Development & Constructionhas been selected to construct a greenfield plant for Dubai Cable Company (Ducab)at the Mussafah industrial area. The estimated AED 55 million-60 million ($15 million-16 million) contract calls for the construction of: a 17,556-square-metre cable factory (main plant) with processing lines; a 325-square-metre copper rod pay-off area; and a 469-square-metre workshop (MEED 5:9:03).

Five companies priced the 13-month contract in early October. The consultant is the UK's Halcrow Group. On-site work is scheduled to start in November. Ducab launched an expansion programme in April to increase its copper processing capacity to 60,000 tonnes a year (t/y) from 35,000 t/y.

The programme also includes the addition of 5,000 t/y of new capacity at Ducab's existing Jebel Ali plant.
