Al-Khorayef wins Kuwait heavy oil project

19 February 2008

Saudi Arabia’s Al-Khorayef Commercial Company has been formally awarded the contract to implement the lower Fars pilot project (LFPP) to produce Kuwait’s first heavy oil with sand from the northern Ratqa field.

Al-Khorayef was expected to win the contract after the Central Tenders Committee approved its offer earlier in the year (MEED 7:2:08).

The two-year design, installation, operation and rental contract involves the drilling and operation of five wells, each with a heavy oil sand production capacity of 200-500 barrels a day.

The work includes the evaluation of reservoir performance, sand separation facilities, artificial lift techniques using progressive cavity pumps, and deciding on the best oil/sand production ratio. The work will be carried out using a method known as cold heavy oil production with sand technique.

The client is Kuwait Oil Company.
