02 May 2010

The Penjah Ali project is the first of several schemes planned for Kirkuk

The local Al-Mansour State Contracting Construction Company is prepared to complete its Penjah Ali housing development in Kirkuk City by the end of May.

According to a statement from Iraq’s Housing Ministry, the 600-building development is 95 per cent complete. Al-Mansour is owned by the ministry and Penjah Ali is its first project.

The project is part of a government initiative to build two million affordable homes in Iraq by 2015. There are 20,000 new homes planned for Kirkuk. The Penjah Ali housing development is the first of several schemes planned for the rural province.

The housing units will have to comply with government guidelines for size, layout, energy efficiency and construction materials. Current guidelines stipulate that the cost of individual housing units cannot exceed $50,000, they are no bigger than 120 square metres, and contain three bedrooms, a living room, bathroom, kitchen and storage areas.

According to Iraq’s National Investment Commission, plans for developing Kirkuk also include building a natural gas production facility in Keywan and oil refineries at the Boor and Baba Kurkur oil fields.

The government and the Kirkuk provincial investment commission have also discussed plans to extend the Kirkuk Military airport to include a commercial terminal as well as build a new seed production facility in the province.
