Al-Shafar contract is latest in a string of awards in the emirate

Local developer Wasl has awarded the local Al-Shafar General Contracting the estimated AED300m ($82m) main construction contract on its Al-Murraqabat development in Dubai.

Located on Muraqabat road in Deira, the development is made up of three buildings together with interior finishings. The blocks will be a four star hotel, hotel apartments and a residential building joint together by a two-level podium. The main construction contract involves constructing the superstructure and interior finishings.

The consultant is the local Bel-Yoahah Architectural & Engineering Consultants.

Contractors in Dubai say that the market conditions began to improve in late-2011 as clients started awarding contracts. In October last year, Al-Futtaim Carillion won an estimated $183m contract from Dubai Health Authority to build the second phase of its 200-bed Al-Jalila Children’s Speciality Hospital in Dubai (MEED 31:10:11).

Then in December, Al-Futtaim Carillion was appointed by local developer Meraas as the contractor for the first phase of its The Avenue project in Dubai.

In early January 2012, local contractor Arabtec Construction has won the AED561m ($153m) contract to expand and refurbish Terminal 2 at Dubai International airport.
