Algeria and Nigeria are discussing ways to finance the remaining section of the Trans-Saharan highway.

Algeria’s Public Works Minister Amar Ghoul is meeting with his Niger and Nigerian counterparts to discuss ways to finance the 230-kilometre section of the highway that runs between the cities of Assamaka and Arlit located in the northern part of Niger.

Algeria has already finished building its own 2,400-km section that runs from Algiers to Ain Gazzem.

The project is part of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (Nepad), which is also assisted by the African Development Bank and the Islamic Development Bank (ISDB).

Other regional financial institutions are expected to participate in the meeting, including the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA).

The 4,500-kilometre Trans-Saharan highway runs between Algiers and Lagos in Nigeria.
