Biography: Amal al-Jowder is the director of health promotion for Bahrain’s Health Ministry. She graduated with a bachelor of medicine degree from the Al-Azhar University in Cairo in Egypt in 1980.

She also has a master’s degree in public health from the School of Public Health & Tropical Medicine at Tulane University in the US. Prior to her current role, Al-Jowder was the head of the health education sector from 1992 to 2009.

Since 1992, Al-Jowder has been a member of the GCC committee of health education and information. Al-Jowder was a member of a health task force for Bahrain’s national youth strategy in 2003-05, and a member of a health task force for Bahraini women empowerment strategy from 2004-07. In 2009, Al-Jowder became the first Arab women to win the Sasakawa health prize from the World Health Organisation.
