Aramco launches Medina storage facility

28 November 2007
Saudi Aramco has launched its fourth strategic storage facility in Medina which will receive petroleum products through a 162km pipeline from Yanbu refinery.

The underground facility, which joins existing storage sites in Riyadh, Jeddah and Abha, includes storage caves for gasoline, jet fuel and diesel.

The site also includes power generation, a product pumping station, lubricating oil storage and an underground control building.

Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Defence and Aviation, Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz al-Saud, said the idea for such strategic storage areas emerged about 20 years ago when foreign aircraft raided the south of the kingdom.

“This necessitated deterrents to prevent a repetition of this incident,” Crown Prince Sultan said.
