Aramco to carry out Red Sea, western region surveys

17 February 2006

Companies are waiting for the release of tender documents by Saudi Aramco for the contract to carry out an airborne gravity seismic survey aimed at identifying probable hydrocarbons deposits over the Red Sea and parts of the western region. The companies interested in the project responded in December to an initial Aramco inquiry. Once completed by year-end and pending budget approval, the airborne survey will be followed by a tender for contracts to carry out 2D and 3D seismic studies, and exploratory drilling in the specified areas next year, says a Dhahran-based industry executive. The first stage will cover a land survey, to be followed by the shooting of data offshore. Aramco is understood to be aiming to complete the surveys around 2008/09. The next stage calls for exploratory drilling in prospective areas.

Aramco plans to carry out similar programmes in other parts of the kingdom in an attempt to boost its reserve/production ratio. An award is imminent for the contract to carry out a three-year 3D transition zone seismic survey covering the offshore Berri field in the Hanifa reservoir in the Eastern Province. The bidders are: the local Arabian Geophysical & Surveying Company (Argas); BGP Arabia, a subsidiary of China's BGP International; and Western Geco GSI, part of the US' Schlumberger. Along with carrying out seismic surveys, Aramco also plans a 60 per cent increase in the number of development wells to be drilled in 2006, compared with last year (MEED 6:1:06). The number of drilling rigs is expected to rise from about 80 to a fleet size of 120 in the third quarter, most of which will be dedicated to exploration.
