France’s Areva has been awarded a Eur470m ($698m) contract on phase 8 of the multi-billion-dollar plan to expand Qatar's power transmission system.
Under the turnkey contract, Areva’s Transmission & Distribution division will deliver 14 gas-insulated substations to improve the electricity network in and around Doha.
It is the division’s largest contract award ever. Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) is the client.
Areva has also been awarded a second contract, which covers the delivery of technology for the upgrade of the National Control Centre built by Areva in the late 1990s.
The contracts were signed during French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s visit to Qatar on 14 January.
