Argentina tries to mend relations with Iran over 94 bombing

11 March 2003
Argentina tried to heal the growing diplomatic rift with Iran on 10 March as the Iranian charge d'affairs Mohammed Ali Tabatabaei was called to a meeting with Argentine Foreign Minister Carlos Ruckhauf. The summons follows the call from an Argentine judge for the arrest of four senior Iranian officials in connection with the 1994 bombing of a Jewish community centre in Buenos Aries. Iran reacted angrily, describing the allegations as 'baseless' and threatening 'appropriate measures' in response. 'There has been no convincing proof of Iran's involvement in that incident, and we have repeatedly said that these rumours and reports are made up in zionist circles,' said Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid-Reza Asefi. About 85 people died in the attack, for which Argentina has long blamed Iran. Those indicted were former Intelligence Minister Ali Fallahain, former cultural attache to Buenos Aries Mohsen Rabbani, diplomat Ali Balesh Abadi, and former Education Minister Ali Akbar Parvaresh. Ruckhauf told reporters that he had told Tabatabaei that the judge's action was independent of the government. 'This is a case being investigated by a judge and not by the government and we hope Iran understands that,' he said.
