Arinc scoops Cairo terminal 3 IT work

18 August 2006
Another key package has been awarded on the new third terminal at Cairo International Airport, with the US-based Arinc winning the estimated $22 million IT contract. The client, Egyptian Airport Company, a subsidiary of Egyptian Holding Company for Airports & Air Navigation (EHCAAN), is tendering a host of other packages on the terminal 3 project and the Borg al-Arab International Airport expansion.

Three other firms had been prequalified for the IT package. They were Germany's Siemens, the US' IBM and France's Alcatel. The scope of works includes the supply and installation of Egypt's first biometric security gate, which Arinc will provide in partnership with France's Sagem. Work is expected to be completed by late 2007.

Prequalification has been launched for the duty-free and travel retail services concession at Cairo. Applications are expected by 27 August, with a shortlist of prequalifiers to follow in early September. Firms to have expressed an interest in the contract include Germany's Gebr Heineman, Singapore's DFS Group, Indonesia's PT Inti Dufree Promosindo, Egypt Air Duty Free and Cairo International Airport Duty Free. The concession contract is worth about $75 million a year.

EHCAAN is already evaluating prequalification applications from eight companies for the 100-metre-high air traffic control (ATC) tower package on terminal 3. The client is expecting to shortlist five-six bidders for the contract, which will be released in late September.

EHCAAN is evaluating prequalification applications submitted by eight groups for the contract to modernise Borg al-Arab. It expects to announce a shortlist and issue the tender in mid-September. The estimated $75 million project calls for the construction of a new terminal with capacity to handle 1 million passengers and 4,000 tonnes of cargo a year, as well as the upgrade of related facilities. An award is expected in early 2007, with completion scheduled for late 2008 (MEED 14:7:06).
