The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has invited companies to bid by 6 September for the second construction contract on the North road scheme. The 720-day contract, covering sections 2 and 3, will involve the construction of 160 kilometres of roads and 20 bridges.

Section 2 will involve the construction of a four-lane dual-carriageway starting at Duhail and passing through Kheessa, Khuraityat, Umm Salal All and Umm Salal Muhammad and ending beyond the Al-Khor road intersection. It will also include the construction of the Simaisma road link that will be a five-kilometre three-lane dual carriageway, and the demolition of the existing Northern relief-Simaisma bridge.

Section 3 will begin
at Al-Khafaji and involves
the construction of a four-lane dual carriageway leading to Madinat al-Shamal, passing the North Military Camp, Al-Kaaban, Al-Juthay, Fuwarit, Al-Ghariya and Athba al-Shamaliyah.

The North road scheme is divided into four sections. The local Darwish Engineering is working on section 1 under a QR 207 million ($57 million) contract awarded in May last year. Beirut-based Dar al-Handasah (Shair & Partners) is the design consultant for the entire scheme (MEED 27:5:05).
