The Indian cable television network Asianet has started negotiations with several Gulf states to provide a limited service in several Indian languages. An Asianet delegation toured Dubai, Bahrain, Sharjhah, Qatar and Kuwait in May, and will return to the area in June.
'Dubai and Bahrain have agreed to beam Asianet programmes for one hour daily through their cable television systems,' according to Hassan Thickody, Asianet marketing representative in Kuwait. 'Sharjah however prefers to have a separate Asianet channel,' he said, adding that talks in Qatar and Kuwait were not conclusive.
