Australian airline drops Dubai on Sydney-London route

Qantas flights to London from Australia will now route through Singapore and Perth

Australian airline Qantas will now route its daily Sydney to London flight through Singapore rather than Dubai.

The decision follows an earlier statement that outlined plans to route its Melbourne to London flight through Perth rather than Dubai.

Qantas announced the plans as it extended its partnership agreement with Dubai-based airline Emirates for another five years.

The original deal signed in 2012 involved Qantas shifting its European hub from Singapore to Dubai and Qantas gaining exclusive landing rights to Emirates’ Terminal 3 at Dubai International airport.

The two airlines then operated 98 weekly flights between Australia and Dubai, including four daily A380 flights.

For the new five-year extension, Qantas says flights between Australia and Dubai will be served by 77 weekly services that Emirates operates from five cities – Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney. These passengers can then fly on Emirates to Dubai, where they have access to more than 60 onward connections on Emirates to Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

“Emirates has worked with Qantas on these network changes,” said Tim Clark, president of Emirates. ”We see an opportunity to offer customers an even stronger product proposition for travel to Dubai, and onward connectivity to our extensive network in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. We will announce updates in the coming weeks.”
