28 March 2003
Italy's Snamprogettiis understood to be well placed to win the estimated $100 million contract to expand Yanbu refinery. The Italian firm is holding final negotiations with the client, Saudi Aramco(MEED 10:1:03).

South Korea's Daelim Engineers & Contractorsis the only other competitor for the contract, which calls for the installation of a new isomerisation unit and enlargement of the plant's continuous catalytic reformer.

The project's front-end engineering and design (FEED) portion was carried out by the US' Foster Wheeler Corporation.

The upgrade is one of several Aramco projects aimed at enhancing domestic refining and power capacity. In early January, Aramco released a tender for the installation of new diesel hydrotreaters at Yanbu and Riyadh refineries. The bid deadline has been extended by two weeks to 14 April (MEED 21:3:03).
