Ayala wins HQ contract

21 November 2003
The UK/Kuwaiti Ayala International has won the contract to convert a derelict hotel complex at Basra International Airport (BIA) for use as a divisional headquarters for British troops.

The company beat off competition from Kellogg Brown & Root of the US with Kharafi International of Kuwait, and Mushrif Trading & Contracting, also of Kuwait, to take the award.

The client, Defence Estates - part of the UK's Ministry of Defence - is also preparing to invite bids for the contract to erect temporary accommodation and camp facilities for up to 500 soldiers in the southern city of Amara (MEED 10:10:03).
