BAE to supply reconnaissance system

27 February 2004
BAE Systems North America, a division of the UK's BAE Systems, has been awarded a $26.8 million contract to supply two advanced airborne reconnaissance systems (AARS), including an associated ground processing capability and integrated logistics support, to the Royal Air Force of Oman. The contract was signed on a foreign military sales (FMS) basis, whereby Washington, through the Aeronautical Systems Center, facilitated the deal.

The AARS is a pod which attaches to the underside of F-16 Block 50 fighter aircraft and replaces cameras, which were previously used to provide reconnaissance data. It enables airborne image acquisition and solid-state storage, ground exploitation indication and intelligence dissemination capabilities. It transmits digital information to ground processing centres for analysis.

The local/Danish COWI & Partners Omanis carrying out design work on a proposed hangar and training complex to house the sultanate's fleet of 16 new F16s, due to be delivered at the end of the year (MEED 6:2:04, Construction).
