Nouri al-Maliki calls for greater cooperation from US in coordinating oil and gas deals in Iraqi Kurdistan
Iraq’s Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has reminded US oil companies to coordinate with Baghdad before making exploration and production deals with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).
Maliki made the comments when meeting the US’ assistant secretary of state for Near Eastern Affairs, Elizabeth Jones.
US oil majors ExxonMobil and Chevron have garnered criticism from Baghdad after signing production sharing agreements with the KRG for oil fields in the Kurdistan region of northern Iraq.
Iraq has stated it will not recognise any deal signed with the KRG that has not been approved by the central government.
