Bahrain boosts air cargo capacity

09 August 2002

Bahrain Airport Services is preparing to issue a tender in the fourth quarter for the expansion of cargo facilities at Bahrain International Airport (BIA). The project entails increasing the size of the main air cargo terminal, which is operating above its original capacity. In the seven months up to July the airport handled 104,615 tonnes of air freight, a 22.5 per cent increase on the corresponding period last year.

Carriers operating scheduled freight services from BIA include Germany's Lufthansa, DHLand Falcon Express, both of the US, and the UK-based DAS Air Cargo. Bahrain's Civil Aviation Authority says the strength of the local economy and the growing volumes of air cargo being forwarded to Saudi Arabia from Bahrain by road have enhanced BIA's role as a centre for transhipment.
