Bahrain International airport cancels enabling works tender

Enabling works tender has been cancelled

The enabling works contract for the expansion of Bahrain International airport has been cancelled, according to a source close to the project.

The cancellation follows the decision to redesign some of the plans for the airport expansion.

There is yet to be a fixed timeline for the retendering of the contract. Local firm Mohammed Jalal & Sons was said to be the preferred bidder for the contract.

The Bahrain Airport Company is looking to boost the capacity for the existing terminal to 15 million passengers a year from the current 9 million.

The airport has seen increasing numbers of passengers passing through the facility, with close to a 10 per cent increase in passenger numbers in 2012 compared to 2011. The airport recorded a total of 8,479,884 passengers last year.

Bahrain’s aviation sector had a tough year in 2011, with both the country’s airlines and airport having to contend with government restrictions on where passenger aircraft could fly.

This in part has led to the liquidation of the country’s private airline Bahrain Air earlier this year and the restructuring of the national carrier Gulf Air.
