Bahrain invites concept proposals for solar project

Proposed project will involve developing photovoltaic solar plant on landfill site

Bahrain’s Electricity & Water Authority (EWA) has invited developers to submit concept proposals for developing a photovoltaic (PV) solar plant on a landfill site.

The site identified for the concept study is the Askar landfill site, located in the southern governorate of Bahrain.

Developers have been invited to submit concept proposals by 11 April. The project will involve remediating the landfill site and developing a PV solar plant.

Bahrain is planning to install 225MW of solar capacity by 2025, and has set a target of developing 700MW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. Manama is planning to achieve the 2030 target by implementing a number of solar, wind and waste-to-energy projects.

In September last year, EWA received proposals from consultants for a planned 100MW PV solar plant.

Bahrain’s first renewable energy project was commissioned in July 2014. The 5MW distributed photovoltaic (PV) solar project was developed by state oil company Bahrain Petroleum Company (Bapco) in collaboration with Bahrain’s Oil & Gas Authority (Nogaholding), EWA and the University of Bahrain.

It was built by the US-based Petra Solar, in partnership with the US’ Caspian Renewable Energy. The project saves about 7,200 tonnes a year of carbon dioxide emissions and the electricity generated is delivered to EWA for distribution.
