Government plans to roll out social housing scheme to other areas

The Bahrain government has started planning the second phase of its scheme to use a public-private partnership (PPP) structure to develop social housing.

Sources close to the project say the new housing minister, Bassem bin Yacoub al-Hamer, is supportive of extending the project. The first phase of the project, to  develop 5,000 new homes, was awarded to the local Naseej in April. “Things are progressing well and bank support is in place for the project,” says a source involved in this phase of the scheme.

Work on the project has slowed since anti-government protests erupted in Bahrain in mid-February, with the lack of adequate housing one of the key complaints of the country’s majority Shia population (MEED 15:04:11).
