Description: The North Manama Causeway project involves the construction of a 2.4-kilometre causeway on reclaimed land. The scheme is planned by the Ministry of Works to create a free-flow traffic corridor in the north of the country, and grade-separated junctions at the Diplomat area and King Faisal highway will ease the flow between the airport, Muharaq in the east and Manama to the west.
The causeway will provide access to the new business districts along its route, namely Bahrain Bay and Bahrain Financial Harbour. The main flyover of the causeway was designed for development using the precast balanced cantilever erection technique, which allows construction to continue while reducing interference with traffic flows on the roads below.
The road scheme has also been designed keeping in mind the protection of the nearby freshwater aquifer. All the piling work was executed so as to maintain the protective neogene seal overlaying the aquifer. The causeway project is nearing completion, with major portions now opened to the public.
