BdL denies Hamas investigation

23 September 2003
Banque du Liban( BdL- the central bank) on 23 September denied reports that it has being carrying out an internal probe into accounts belonging to Hamas officials in Lebanon. The denial comes soon after the bank's special investigation committee for money laundering asked for records on all accounts belonging to Hamas members and charities linked to the Palestinian group. However, BdLdid not ask for the accounts to be frozen. The list of names is the same as that compiled by the US administration in late July.

BdLgovernor, Riad Salameh, said that the bank would not break any banking secrecy laws. He added that the bank's policies were made by the Lebanese government, which supports Palestinian resistance and does not consider Hamas to be a terrorist organisation. Salameh said that the contradiction in the request comes from the need for BdLto meet international requirements for combating money laundering.
