BG moves ahead with Barca plant

30 May 2003
The UK's BG Groupon 27 May signed a formal protocol agreement with the government for the development of the $250 million Barca independent power plant (IPP) on the coast 21 kilometres south of Sfax. BG will sell the electricity generated from the 500-MW plant to state power company Societe Tunisienne de l'Electricite & du Gaz (STEG),with whom it is negotiating a power purchase agreement (MEED 14:2:03).

Three engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractors - Enelpowerand Ansaldo Energia, both of Italy, and Paris-based Alstom- have submitted proposals to build the combined-cycle gas turbine plant, which will use up to 120 million cubic feet a day of unprocessed gas sourced from BG's offshore interests in the Miskar concession. Feedstock may also come from the Hasdrubal gas and condensate discovery. Construction of the plant is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2004 and the Barca IPP is expected to come on stream in late 2006.
