Bidders line up for cultural village

06 June 2003
Technical bid evaluation is under way for the main package on the cultural village project, which is to be built between the Aladdin Kingdom theme park and the Diplomatic quarter in the West Bay area of Doha. Local and international contractors submitted bids in late May for the contract, which is valued at over QR 250 million ($68.7 million). The project is being handled by a specially-created steering committee.

About six companies are bidding for the contract. They include Qatar Arabian Construction Company, Darwish Engineering, Construction Development Company, Contraco, and Midmac Contracting, all local, and Paris-based Thinet International.

The scope of works for the main package covers the construction of 37 one and two-storey buildings with a built-up area of 78,000 square metres. It includes cafes, restaurants, mosques, a multi-purpose hall, a cinema, a media centre, traditional souqs and associated infrastructure. Commercial bids for the package are expected to be opened by the end of June.

The site preparation and basic infrastructure package is being carried out by Qatar Building Company.

The consultant for the development is the UK's Maunsell.
