Bidders line up for Dubai airport concourse project

11 October 2002

The Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) has invited companies to apply for prequalification by 16 October for a major package on the Dubai International Airport (DIA) airport expansion scheme (MEED 1:2:02; 14:12:01).

Called PQ22, it covers the reinforced concrete works in substructures for the proposed second concourse, third terminal and car park. The facilities will be constructed in three levels over a total area of 870,000 square metres. The lowest will be built at a depth of 20 metres below ground level. A total of 1.8-2 million cubic metres of concrete will be used to construct the facilities, which will take about two years to build.

The contract includes the supply and installation of a waterproofing system and electrical, mechanical and related works.

The construction of two new concourses and a new terminal is a major element of DCA's estimated $2,500 million expansion project of DIA. Other facilities include the construction of a new cargo village, the upgrade of airfield facilities and the expansion of Dubai Cargo Village.

The local Al-Naboodah Contracting Company is carrying out work for the AX 056 package. Estimated to be worth AED 500 million ($136 million), it involves earthworks and piling for terminal 3, concourse 2 and the car park. The consultants are Beirut-based Dar al-Handasah (Shair & Partners) and France's Aeroports de Paris(MEED 5:7:02).
