Proposals are due to be submitted on 1 February for a build-own-operate-transfer (BOOT) contract covering a 10,000-tonne-a-day (t/d) desalination plant to serve the Rabigh refinery, located near Yanbu. The client is Saudi Aramco, which is also tendering four independent power plants (IPPs - MEED 15:11:02).

The prospective bidders for the desalination unit are Weir Westgarthof the UK; France's Sidem; Japan's Sasakura Engineering; Italy's Fisia Italimpianti; and Aquatechof the US.

About nine international and local companies are prequalified to submit proposals by late February for the four combined-cycle IPPs, to be built at Juaimah, Shedgum, Ras Tanoura and Uthmaniya, which will each have capacity of 200-300 MW (MEED 15:11:02).
