Bidding accelerates on Nuberiya 3

28 July 2006
Egyptian Electricity Holding Company (EEHC) is evaluating technical bids for the contract to supply two gas turbines for the 750-MW Nuberiya 3 combined cycle power plant. Three companies are competing to provide the 250-MW turbines Germany's Siemens, the US' General Electric (GE) and Italy's Ansaldo Energia. Commercial bids are expected to be opened in early August, followed by an award in late September.

Tender documents for the civil works package are due to be issued in August. Three local companies have been prequalified for the package, which is expected to be awarded in late November. Companies are preparing to submit bids by 23 October to supply the plant's single 250-MW steam turbine. Power Generation Engineering & Services Company (PGESCo), the project consultant and EEHC subsidiary, is preparing the tender for the electro-mechanical package.

The plant is being part-financed by a $194 million loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB). Project completion is expected in 2009/10. Along with the 750-MW Nuberiya 3 and Kureimat 3 plants, two more combined cycle developments of similar size are planned by EEHC at Sidi Krier and Al-Apfa (MEED 19:5:06).
