Bids awaited for major shopping mall

Plans for a major new mixed-use complex on the fifth ring-road are taking shape, with a select group of contractors preparing to submit bids by 25 May for the main construction contract. The development, known as The Avenue, will have a built-up area of about 200,000 squares metres and is expected to have as its anchor tenants an IKEAstore and a Carrefoursupermarket, as well as a cinema complex. The client on the estimated $100 million project is the local Mabani.

Three companies are understood to have been invited to submit bids for the main package. They are: the local Mohamed Abdulmohsin Kharafi & Sons; the local Ahmadiah Contracting & Trading Company; and Al-Ahlia Contracting Group, also local, with Belgium's Six Construct. Specialist subcontractors for packages such as the roof structure, elevators and lifts and external works will be nominated to the main contractor.

The client is looking to implement the project on a fast-track basis, with the main contract due to be completed in 18 months.
