Sharjah-based Gulftainer Companyhas invited five companies to bid by 7 August for the contract to expand Khor Fakkan container terminal. The estimated $150 million project calls for the construction of two new deepwater berths, with four super post-Panamax gantry cranes. Sharjah Ports & Customs Authority is the client (MEED 26:9:03).
The project, which is scheduled for completion by 2006, is intended to double Khor Fakkan's existing handling capacity from 1.8 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) a year. Halcrowof the UK has completed detailed design studies for the scheme. Gulftainer, which is the port's operator, is also in talks to attract another shipping line to the port. Shipping lines already using the port include the US-registered Global Container Line, Denmark's Maersk Sealandand Swiss-registered Mediterranean Shipping Company.
