Bids are under evaluation for the contract to build a hypermarket in Alexandria for MAF Misr, the local arm of Dubai-based Majid al-Futtaim Group. It is the second in a series of four such facilities MAF Misr is setting up in Egypt in association with France's Carrefour(MEED 21:9:01).
It is understood that the bidders for the Alexandria scheme are similar to those that quoted for the first project, the Maadi City Centre, in southeast Cairo. The Maadi complex is being built by a joint venture of Dubai-based ETA Asconand the local NAB Contractorsfor £E 58 million ($14 million). The local DSD Ferrometlacohas the structural steel package. The other bidders on the Maadi job are understood to have included Hassan Allam Sons (Misr Sons Development), Orascom Construction Industries, Ginza and CRC Hassan Dorra- all local - and a joint venture of the local Industrial Construction & Engineering Company (SIAC)and South Africa's Murray & Roberts Contractors (Middle East). The Alexandria centre is said to be some 25 per cent larger than the Maadi facility.
The consultant for the four shopping centres is the local Hegazy & Moez.
