Bids in for Bubiyan tourism project

Three companies - the UK's Bovis, and Hill International and DMJM, both US-based - submitted bids on 8 June for the post of project manager on the proposedBubiyan island development scheme (MEED 25:4:03).

The tourism project will include the construction of hotels, chalets and recreational facilities on the island and a causeway to the main island. Covering an area of about 530 square kilometres, the project is to be carried out on a build-operate (BO) basis.

A joint venture of Toronto-based HOK Planning Group and the local Gulf Consultis acting as consultant. The team is due to carry out a masterplan for the island development and an environmental impact study.

Bubiyan is one of two Gulf islands northeast of Kuwait bay which the government is planning to develop into a major tourist resort. The other scheme involves Failaka island, covering a total area of 43 square kilometres. It calls for the construction of hotels, chalets, camping sites, recreational facilities and four new jetties. The client is the Executive Authority for the Development of Kuwaiti Islands, Divided Zones & Major Projects (MEED 6:6:03).
