The bidders are understood to include: Athens-based Consolidated Contractors International Company (CCC), with the local/UK Dutco Balfour Beatty; Australia's Grocon, with Dubai Civil Engineering (DCE); the local/South African joint venture of Al-Habtoor Engineering Enterprisesand Murray & Roberts Contractors (Middle East), with the local/Belgian Bel Hasa Six Constructand Egypt's Orascom Construction Industries; the local/Australian Nasa Multiplex, with the local/UK Al-Futtaim Carillion; the local/UK Al-Naboodah Laing; and Saudi Binladin Group.
The contract calls for construction of a shopping mall with 600,000 square metres of retail space and 700,000 square metres of car parking. In addition, the successful bidder will build a district cooling plant, external works and services. The mall is due to open in the fourth quarter of 2006. CCSME, a subsidiary of Australia's Clifton Coney Group, is the project manager on the prestigious mall development. Meinhardt Singaporeis acting as consultant.
For the main contract on Burj Dubai, bids are currently due in on 15 June. At least 10 groups are prequalified to bid for the 705-metre-high tower, which will house offices, apartments and a hotel. The successful bidder is expected to move on site in the first quarter of 2005, with completion set for mid-2008. The US' Turner Internationalis the project manager; the design consultant is Skidmore Owings & Merrill, also of the US (MEED 23:4:04).
