Bids in for Kuwait harbour project

19 September 2003
The local Gulf Dredging & Contracting Company (GDC) has submitted a low bid of KD 5.6 million ($19 million) for the first construction package on the project to develop new harbour stations and related facilities for the coastguard. GDC's offer is about 41 per cent lower than the next price of KD 7.9 million ($26 million) submitted by Burhan International Contracting Company, also local. Twelve groups of international and local companies were prequalified to bid, but only six companies priced the package by the 14 September deadline (MEED 31:1:03).

The contract covers the construction of an 840-metre-long breakwater, jetties, pontoons and quays for nine vessels and a disposal area, the dredging of about 117,000 cubic metres and related civil, electrical and mechanical works. The proposed facilities, to be built on Umm al-Maradem island in the Gulf, will take 12-18 months to complete.

Two other packages are to be tendered on the project. Totalling KD 6.9 million ($23 million), they will involve the construction of similar facilities on the islands of Auhah and Garoh.

The consultant is Denmark's Kampsax International; the client is the Ministry of Public Works.
