Saudi Arabian Mining Company (Maaden) has started evaluating design and build bids for the marine works package on its new industrial zone at Ras al-Zour.
Four dredging groups are competing for the $300 million-500 million contract. They are China Harbour Engineering Company, Belgium's Dredging International with the local Huta Group, Royal Boskalis Westminster of the Netherlands with Geneva-registered Archirodon Construction (Overseas), and Belgium's Jan de Nul with the local Acco.The contract involves the dredging of a channel to a depth of 15 metres, as well as the port basin. The consultant is Worley Arabia (MEED 27:10:06).The port will cater for vessels of up to 70,000 dwt and will initially handle bauxite, process chemicals and other equipment required for the aluminium smelter being planned by Maaden.
