Bids in for transmission project

15 October 2001

The Ministry of Electricity & Water is evaluating bids for two contracts on the estimated $100 million project to establish a 220-kV transmission system for the Hidd desalination and power plant. Thirteen international contractors submitted proposals on 2 October for the main substation and transformer packages. The ministry has given a two-week extension for the third transmission cables package.

The project entails the construction of three new substations at Madinat Hamad, Jasra and the Aluminium Bahrain (Alba)industrial area, and the expansion of three existing gas insulated switchgear stations at Um al-Hassam, Isa Town and Hidd. Package 3 calls for the supply and installation of cross-linked polyethylene cabling to connect the six stations to the main transmission yard at Hidd. The project is part-financed by the Kuwait-based Arab Fund for Economic & Social Development and the Jeddah-based Islamic Development Bank, with the government funding the balance (MEED 8:6:01).
