Kish Free Zone Organisationand Qeshm Free Authority have issued tenders for development of the airports on their respective islands on a build-operate-transfer (BOT) basis (MEED 12:9:03).

The Kish project involves the construction and equipping of international and cargo terminals, a new hangar, expansion of the apron and construction of a new control tower as well as administrative buildings. The consultant is the local Atec Consulting Engineers.

The tender calls for the project to be carried out within the framework of an existing master development plan. The project was tendered in 2003 but did not progress.

The Qeshm project will involve the expansion of facilities to accommodate a projected growth in airport handling from 150,000 passengers a year to 1 million by 2015. Qeshm Investment Development Organisationmanaging director Allan Wain says the project will involve aviation opportunities, including air cargo warehousing, aircraft and engine maintenance and servicing, equipment manufacture and flight crew training.

Non-aviation-related opportunities will include retailing, telecommunications, a business park, a financial centre and a hotel and conference centre. Contracts will be tendered over an 18-month period.
