Binladin takes airport work

19 January 2007

Plans to upgrade the terminal facilities at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah are finally moving ahead, five months after bids were submitted. The multi-billion-dollar expansion is one of the most eagerly anticipated projects in the kingdom as the airport is the main gateway for millions of pilgrims.

Saudi Binladin Group has been selected ahead of local rival Saudi Oger on the estimated SR 600 million-900 million ($160 million-240 million) design and build contract. It covers the upgrade and expansion of the north, south and hajj terminals.

The contract forms part of a wider expansion aimed at increasing capacity from 10.5 million passengers a year to about 25 million a year by 2009.
