Burj Dubai welcomes hotel contractors

Bids have been submitted for the main contract to build the 300-metre-high Lake View hotel and serviced apartments on the Burj Dubai development. The estimated $200 million Lake View scheme is one of two hotel projects out to tender on Burj Dubai. The client is the local Emaar Properties(MEED 8:7:05).

The bidders for the Lake View contract include the local/South African joint venture of Al-Habtoor Engineering Enterprisesand Murray & Roberts Contractors(Middle East), a local joint venture of Al-Jaber Grinaker-LTA and Robodh Contractingand the local/Belgian joint venture of Arabtec Construction and Bel Hasa Six Construct.

The project calls for the construction of a 63-storey, five-star facility, offering 194 rooms, 626 apartments, parking and related facilities, with a total built-up area of about 180,000 square metres. South Africa's Mirage Mille Leisure & Development is the project manager. The architect is the UK's Atkins.

Bids are due in early August for the Dubai Mall hotel, although a two-week bid extension is expected. Estimated to be worth about $140 million, the project will involve the construction of a 35-storey building with a two-level podium. Prequalifiers include the local Associated Constructions & Investments (Ascon)and Arabtec, CSHK Dubai Contracting (CSHK)- the local affiliate of China State Construction Engineering (Hong Kong) -and the local/UK joint ventures of Dutco Balfour Beattyand Al-Naboodah Laing O'Rourke. The consultant is Meinhardt Singapore.

Emaar has recently awarded two major hotel contracts. Al-Naboodah Laing O'Rourke is working on the 60-storey commercial island project, while Al-Jaber Grinaker-LTA is carrying out the hotels A and B package.

Once completed, the Burj Dubai development will house eight hotels and contain about 2,000 rooms. They will include a Giorgio Armanihotel in the Burj Dubai tower and two hotels in the Old Town district, to be managed by South Africa's Southern Sun Hotel.
