Cairo seeks firms for new metro line

Authority launches procurement for project management, civil works and rolling stock contracts

  • Japan Bank of International Cooperation (Jbic) to fund the 18.8km first phase of Line 4
  • Six firms have been invited for the project management consultancy contract
  • Prequalification documents released for two civils contracts and one rolling stock contract

Egypt’s National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) has invited six firms to bid for the project management contract for the first phase of Cairo Metro’s Line 4.

Funded by the Japan Bank of International Cooperation (Jbic), the consultancy firms invited for the contract include Nippon Koei, Oriental Consultants, Japan International Consultants for Transportation, Tonichi Engineering, Japan Electrical Consulting and Nippon Civic Consulting Engineers.

The NAT also invited companies to prequalify for the two civil contracts and rolling stock contract for the first phase of Line 4.

The prequalification is open only to Japanese contractors or joint ventures between Japanese and Egyptian contractors.

Deadline for the submission of prequalification documents is on 22 December.

The first phase of Line 4 will have a total length of 18.8km and feature 17 stations. It will extend from the multimodal station west of the Ring Road to the Grand Egyptian Museum and on to the El-Remayah Square to link with the Giza Station of line 2, El-Malek el-Saleh station of line 1, and to the Al-Fustat station.

The first of the two civils contract for phase 1 will feature one at -grade and eight underground stations, while the second civils package will include eight underground stations.

For the rolling stock, phase 1 will require eight train sets, with each featuring 23 cars.

Line 4 will be constructed in two phases and will run 43km from west to east Cairo. It will connect 6th of October and the New Cairo satellite cities with the existing metro network, catering to the transport needs of some of Cairo’s most highly areas including Al-Ahram, Faisal, Giza, Nasr City, Al-Azhar University and New Cairo.
