Canadians to prepare university masterplan

24 September 2004
Canada's Webb Zerafa Menkes Housdenhas been selected to prepare the masterplan for a major university campus project at Shadadiyah, near the airport. Three other US architects, understood to be HOK, Perkins & Willand Cambridge 7 Associates, were competing for the contract, for which Kuwait University is the client.

The estimated KD 1,000 million ($3,448 million) project aims to bring all the current university faculties, which are currently spread across the capital, under one roof. The new educational facility will be co-educational and accommodate up to 40,000 students. Local consultants are doing the designs for the dormitories, sports facilities and auditoriums as well as all the individual faculties.

Local consultants also have been invited to submit design proposals for the university's management offices and car park. The only faculty not to be contained within the new university will be the $41 million marine science college at Fintas, which is currently being built by the local Burhan International Contracting Company(MEED 3:9:04).
