The excavation works for the Zawaya project are part of the first phase of the masterplan launched last year

Beijing-based China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC) has started excavation work for a mixed-use project at Union Properties’ Motor City development in Dubai.

The Zawaya project will be built around a town square and will have a total floor area of about 37,000 square metres, including about 5,000 square metres of retail space. There will be 400 residences including studios, and one and two-bedroom apartments.

Zawaya marks the start of the first phase of the new masterplan for Motor City. In September last year Union Properties and CSCEC signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the construction of the estimated AED8bn ($2.2bn) development.

The overall scheme comprises 44 high and low rise buildings, more than 150 villas, and a wide range of residential, commercial, entertainment and hospitality facilities. It is expected to include more than 11,500 residential units, about 3,000 serviced apartments, 3,500 hotel rooms, 46,000 square metres of retail space and more than 300,000 square metres of office space.

The centerpiece of the masterplan is known as the Vertex, which is made up of five towers containing hotel and serviced apartment space. The tallest tower will be more than 80 storeys.

The design consultant for the project is Australia’s Atlis Architecture.
