One of the two contracts entails the installation of a fibre optic network on all roads

Dubai’s Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) has awarded the civil and infrastructure division of China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC) two contracts worth AED350m ($95m) for the supply and installation of key elements of the emirate’s intelligent traffic system (ITS).

The first contract, worth AED150m, covers the deployment of dynamic message signs (DMS) and associated control cabinets and support structures.

The second contract, worth AED200m, entails the deployment of field ITS outstation cabinets, hub cabinets, main distribution boards (MDBs), feeder pillars and a fibre optic communication network.

MEED understands the fibre optic network will provide ITS coverage for major roads and highways including Sheikh Zayed Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, Al-Khail Road and 23 other roads.

According to a CSCEC statement, the second package will extend the emirate’s roadways monitoring and control coverage from 11 per cent to 100 per cent.

It is understood the second contract comprises the new advanced traffic management system (ATMS) that will replace RTA’s existing Falcon ATMS.

MEED reported that RTA expects to imminently appoint a consultant for the contract to develop an integrated traffic safety and sustainable city platform for Dubai.

The project will look into providing a platform that supports transport-related research and development, testing site(s), academic participation and support trends in transportation innovations, traffic, safety and automotive industries.
