03 February 2008
The US Cisco has won the contract to design the information and communications technology infrastructure for Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC).

Cisco will also offer network consultancy and advisory services to the city’s master developers, Emaar, the Economic City (EEC). KAEC covers an area of 168 million square metres.

Cisco is already working with the kingdom's Knowledge Economic City (KEC) to develop the city's communications network. KEC is expected to spend $266m on building the communications infrastructure to connect its 4.8 million sq m development (MEED 01:06:07).

Located on the Red Sea coast north of Jeddah, KAEC is the largest private sector project in the region. It includes a 14 million sq m seaport with an annual capacity of 10 million 20 foot equivalent units, and an industrial zone. The UAE’s Emal International has recently announced plans to build a $5bn aluminium smelter in the city.
