Atkins will work on Khazaen Economic City, which will be a new logistics hub for the sultanate

The UK’s Atkins has been appointed as lead consultant for the Khazaen Economic City project in Northern Oman.

Atkins, part of Canada’s SNC Lavalin, secured the RO2.6m ($6.8m) contract that involves preparing the detailed master plan, environmental assessment, sustainability assessment, engineering designs for infrastructures and utilities, preparation and evaluation of construction tenders for infrastructure work.

The consultant will then supervise the construction of the first phase of the infrastructure.

The initial work by Atkins will be to prepare the concept and detailed masterplans, which is expected to take about six months.

Atkins was one of four shortlisted firms for the contract. The others were the local F&M Middle East Consulting Engineers, the local office of KEO International Consultants and US-based Parsons.

Oman Logistics Company and project company Khazaen Economic City (KEC) are leading the development of the scheme, which will ultimately involve the development of 5.15 square kilometres of land inland of Barka and close to Muscat. It will be delivered in five phases, with a dry port and logistics infrastructure providing the commercial core of the development.

Oman is starting early development work on other major projects. In late June, Oman Tourism Development Company (Omran) and Dubai’s Majid al-Futtaim (Maf) announced plans to develop the RO5bn Madinat al-Irfan mixed-use project next to the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre (OCEC).
