Contractors awarded ADWEA substation orders

Abu Dhabi Water & Electricity Authority (ADWEA) has awarded contracts worth over AED 500 million ($136 million) to international contractors for the construction of new substations across the emirate. Further awards are also pending as the utility steps up the expansion of the emirate's transmission and distribution network (MEED 19:3:04).

Japan's TMT&D Corporationhas won an estimated AED 280 million ($76 million) worth of new work from ADWEA, involving the construction of a new 400-kV substation at Madinat Zayed and the expansion of the existing 220-kV substation at the same location. Other companies to price both packages included Germany's Siemensand Europe's ABB.

South Korea's Hyundai Engineering & Construction Companyhas also been awarded work worth an estimated AED 240 million ($65 million) to supply and install two 220-kV substations at Bu Hasa and Bab. The work is expected to take about 23 months.

Awards are pending on the Gayathy and Ramah 220-kV substation projects. The local Emirates Trading Agency (ETA)is the frontrunner to take the work, which in total is valued at about AED 240 million.
