Contractors compete for Tameer Towers contract

Deal involves completing residential towers on Abu Dhabi’s Reem Island

Local real estate developer Tameer Holding is evaluating bids from at least five companies for the contract to complete the construction of its Tameer Towers development on Abu Dhabi’s Reem Island.

The bidders include the local Al-Futtaim Carillion, the local/Lebanese Arabian Construction Company (ACC), the local Al-Shafar General Contracting, Canada’s Brookfield Multiplex, and the local Square General Contracting Company.

The selected contractor will complete phase 1 of the project, which includes more than 2,000 apartments, by the end of 2013. According to Tameer, about 20 per cent of the construction work on the development has been completed.

It is the third time that the developer has approached contractors for the construction contract on the development. It first approached contractors in 2007 and formed an alliance with South Africa’s Murray & Roberts Contractors (Middle East), the local/Australian Al-Habtoor Leighton Group and the local Al-Rajhi Projects & Construction in 2008.

Murray & Roberts Contractors left the alliance in 2009. Al-Habtoor Leighton Group and Al-Rajhi Projects & Construction signed a fresh construction contract later that year after Tameer invited contractors to express interest in the project for a second time.  The Al-Habtoor Leighton Group later decided to leave the project leaving Al-Rajhi Projects & Construction to complete the work.

The overall project was originally designed with six towers between the sea and the Central Park area of the Shams Abu Dhabi development on Reem Island. The main buildings are a 74-floor, 300 metre-high office tower in the commercial area, a 21-floor hotel and apartment tower, two 50-floor residential towers and two 30-floor residential towers. The total built-up area is 915,000 square metres.
