Contractors gear up for Kayan

Four international contractors are understood to be preparing to submit technical bids by25 August for the ethylene oxide/ethylene glycol (EO/EG) package at the Jubail petrochemicals complex, planned by Saudi Kayan Petrochemical Company.

Prospective bidders for the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract are Japan's Toyo Engineering Corporation, Taiwan-based CTCI and South Korea's Samsung Engineering Company and Hyundai Engineering & Construction Company, both of South Korea. Commercial offers are due in late September.

The contract involves theconstruction of an EO/EG unit with nameplate capacity of just over 1 million tonnes a year. Technology for the plant has been licensed from the US' Scientific Design (MEED 9:6:06). Kellogg Brown & Root and Fluor Corporation, both of the US, recently received letters of intent for the complex's cracker and offsites and utilities packages (MEED 30:6:06).
